Arepa Factory joins the Columbus Circle market
Food halls — the favorite food trend of real estate developers everywhere — popped up like crazy in the last year, and now, some of them are switching up the food options.
Up near Columbus Circle, underground subway market Turnstyle has added four new vendors, including froyo, bubble tea, and arepas. East Village Venezuelan restaurant Arepa Factory will be serving its globally-inspired arepas in the market. The restaurant has entered Eater critic Robert Sietsema’s canon of great places for cheap eats, particularly for the options that veer from traditionally Venezuelan fillings. He particularly enjoys a Mexican-esque option called Frida Khalo, which stuffs the arepa with cumin-scented ground beef, avocado, and shredded cheese.
Owners of bubble tea chain Chatime are debuting a location of Panda Bubble Tea in the market as well. The new stand will serve a sparkling version of bubble tea as well as more traditional milk teas, juices, and smoothies. Pizza chain Champion Pizza will also join the market, serving pies from restaurateur Hakki Akdeniz. Finally, one of the last living froyo chains 16 Handles will spread its footprint to Turnstyle, too.
Further south, the mini-outdoor food hall Bowery Market — home to the tiny and uber-popular omakase stand Sushi on Jones from chef David Bouhadana — is adding a new vendor serving Indian street food, according to Bowery Boogie. Smorgasburg veteran Parantha Alley will be planting a location there, serving fresh made roti filled with fillings like aloo-mattar (potato and green peas) and machli (mahi mahi fish and chillies).
Bowery Market opened last summer at 348 Bowery with five vendors in the space of a former auto-body shop. Since then, several vendors have left the market, including Champion Coffee, The Butcher’s Daughter, and Pulqueria.
Besides Turnstyle and Bowery Market, food halls Union Fare, Great Northern Food Hall, Gotham Market at Ashland, and the Canal Street Market all opened in the last year. Upscale grocery store Whole Foods also paired its newest locations with de facto food halls, both in Williamsburg and near Bryant Park.
The onslaught of food markets isn’t stopping, either. Popular seasonal food market Smorgasburg, arguably a major reason why this epidemic started, is planting a permanent food market in Soho this year. The highly anticipated Dekalb Market at City Point in Downtown Brooklyn — which will be home to the first Brooklyn location of Katz’s, among other things — will also open later this spring.
